Sergeant Clare L. Wheeler, affectionately known as "Buck," was born in 1924 to Leslie and Mable Wheeler and was raised in Windsor, Wisconsin. He graduated from DeForest Area High School and later enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. Serving as a tail gunner in the 703rd Bomb Squadron of the 445th Bomb Group, Sgt. Wheeler participated in several critical missions.
On September 27, 1944, Sgt. Wheeler was tragically killed in action during the Kassel Mission.
His remains were returned to his family for reburial several years later. Sgt. Wheeler is interred at the Windsor Congregational Cemetery in Windsor, Wisconsin.
